Key Uses of Magnetically Shielded Chokes

01/

Filtering and Smoothing: Inductors are used to attenuate or filter high-frequency noise from circuits, ensuring smoother voltage and current supply.

02/

Energy Storage: They temporarily store energy in switched power supplies, enabling efficient transfer to loads or capacitors.

03/

Choke Coils: Inductors block rapid changes in current, functioning as chokes to pass DC but block AC, improving circuit reliability.

04/

Tuned Circuits: Along with capacitors, inductors form oscillators (LC circuits) that select or generate specific frequencies, useful in radios and receivers.

05/

Impedance Matching: They match circuit impedances to maximize power transfer, especially in communication and audio systems.

06/

Inductors also suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI): In modern electronics, aiding compliance with global standards.

Testing Methods of the Magnetically Shielded Chokes

Resistance Test
One of the simplest ways to test an inductor is to measure its resistance using a multimeter. Resistance is the opposition to the flow of electric current in a conductor. An ideal inductor should have zero resistance, but in reality, every inductor has some internal resistance due to the wire and the core material. To perform a resistance test, you need to set the multimeter to the lowest ohm range and connect the probes to the inductor terminals. The reading should be very low, typically less than 1 ohm. If the reading is too high or infinite, it means the inductor is open or damaged.

Inductance Test
Another way to test an inductor is to measure its inductance using an LCR meter. Inductance is the property of an inductor that determines how much magnetic flux it can generate for a given current. Inductance is measured in henries (H) and depends on the number of turns, the cross-sectional area, and the core material of the inductor. To perform an inductance test, you need to set the LCR meter to the inductance mode and connect the leads to the inductor terminals. The reading should match the nominal value of the inductor, usually printed on its label or datasheet. If the reading is too low or too high, it means the inductor is shorted or has a loose winding.

Maintenance of Magnetically Shielded Chokes

• Control the operating temperature
Ensure that the inductor operates within the specified temperature range. Avoid installing it in an overheated environment. The temperature can be reduced by strengthening heat dissipation measures, such as installing heat sinks and increasing ventilation.

• Moisture and dustproof
If the working environment is relatively harsh, protective measures should be taken, such as using a sealed housing or coating to prevent moisture and dust from entering the inductor.

FAQ

Q: What is the benefit of using shielded inductors in dense PCBs?

A: Shielded inductors reduce magnetic leakage, helping prevent cross-talk and interference between nearby components.

Q: What happens to an inductor after a long time?

A: As time passes, the current increases at a constant rate with time until the inductor starts to saturate. In the long-time limit, the transient response of the inductor will die out, the magnetic flux through the inductor will become constant, so no voltage would be induced between the terminals of the inductor.

Q: Do inductors degrade over time?

A: The higher electrical and thermal stress on molded power inductors can lead to an increase in magnetic core loss over time due to a material degradation related to the percolation phenomenon.

Q: Why are magnetically shielded inductors important?

A: Magnetically shielded inductors reduce magnetic interference, protecting nearby components and improving circuit stability in compact PCB designs.

Q: How do you know if an inductor is bad?

A: That's the quickest way of identifying a faulty inductor. To measure an inductor, use a digital multimeter and check for continuity. Remember, an inductor is just a wire! Set your multimeter to resistance mode.
